Weekly Specialty Camps

Each summer the Department of Community Programs strives to put together a robust schedule of specialty camps. These camps all run by the week and typically run Monday through Friday, reserving Friday as a raindate in the event the camp is held outside. Offerings include STEAM, Art, Fashion, Pony, Sports, Golf, Drones and more! These specialty camps are all run through third party contractors. Week 1: Animal Cartoon Workshop

Laugh-out-loud-funny! Mind-bendingly-adorable! Awesome-beyond-belief! These are just some of the words that best describe our Cartoon Animals Workshop. If your child is a fan of cuddly animals and funny cartoons, this drawing workshop is especially tailored for his or her needs. Over the course of five days, our students will learn how to draw animals of all shapes, sizes, and colors. Week 1: Robotics

Children learn about the uses of robots in our world and spend time experimenting with super cool red-hot robots. They discover the science of circuits and how robots use sensors to explore things around them. They build their very own working robot to take home with them!

 

Week 2: NASA Space Camp

Set your future space explorers on a trajectory from our Earth’s atmosphere to the outer reaches of our solar system! This hands-on program brings them closer to the stars, planets, comets, and more. They learn about living in space, getting away from gravity, and looking for space phenomena!


Week 2: Caribbean Vacation Fashion Week

Time for a vacation from home! Join us for this fashion week to create a stylish Caribbean vacation beach coverup! Our designers will start with the sketch (croquis), technical details, choosing and rendering the fabric, learning the proper way to make a pattern, including measuring each other, understanding the importance of this process and the fit of the garment. They learn how to pin and sew using a sewing machine. Then, they sew the entire garment including the final fitting. Finally, on the last day of our camp, we hold our Fashion Show. During our fashion summer camp weeks, we add fashion challenges (i.e. Newspaper challenges, trash bag challenges), for our designers to explore their innermost fashion taste and skills. Our designers team up with other designers for this quite unique and fun experience. No sewing experience necessary. All fabric, supplies, and use of the sewing machines are included.


Week 3: Hobby Quest's Photography - Dreamscapes

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Technology has made taking a picture simpler than ever, but the process has become so automated that the “art” of photography is becoming lost. Well, in our photography program, we teach you to carefully compose each shot to get it right the first time, without having to edit out unwanted results.  Session highlights include learning to manipulate perspective, and capturing impressions of images through reflective surfaces. The class concludes with a live gallery show in which you get to display your works with your family.

Week 4: Drones

In Snapology’s Drone Commander program, students will be introduced to the world of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and develop a deep understanding how to control and manage this exciting technology. In this workshop, children will learn about the types of UAVs, the parts needed for controlled flight, the forces of flight, basic drone safety, and a variety of flying maneuvers. This exciting program will give your child the chance to safely test out some of the newest advances in robotics and really take their knowledge of engineering to new heights

Week 5: 70’s Disco Fashion Week

Design and create flared pants or bell-bottom pants. Designers will explore 70’s patterns and designs. Our designers will choose from an array of fun patterns suitable for this occasion. Week 6: Robotics Superhero Academy LEGO® Camp

Campers will be building Superheroes with LEGO® bricks and superhero models. Together, the campers will create a fantasy world and protect it against all the evil arch enemies with custom contraptions made with LEGO® bricks - both motorized models and 3-D superhero figures. Each day, campers will also use fascinating and challenging LEGO® components to create dynamic vehicles, inventions, machines and more.

Week 7: Cartoon Adventures in Space

Join Young Rembrandts as we travel to the farthest reaches of the galaxy in our Cartoon Adventures in Space workshop. Futuristic scenes of other worldly adventures highlight the spectacular drawings our students will produce. We will join our own colorful cast of cartoon characters, like Sketch the mouse, Shade the cat and Dave the elephant. Not only will our students learn how to illustrate science fiction-inspired characters and moments, but they will also strengthen their drawing and coloring skills. From astronauts in jetpacks to out-of-this-world alien lifeforms, our students will learn how to compose well-drawn cartoon figures in dynamic poses. Get ready for four days of exciting, intergalactic imagery!

 

Week 8: Video Game Design Camp (I)

In this beginner Video Game Design camp, campers will build their coding and programming foundation using the Scratch Programming.  The camp curriculum focuses on teaching campers the fundamentals in creating animations and games using data structures, algorithms and game design. Students will learn to create unique game design projects with functions that involve math and logic. Challenging problems are given in each class to enhance students understanding and encourage creativity.

 

Week 8: South American Themed Fashion Week

Week 10: Ocean Life All Pastels

Four, fun-filled days await our students as we explore ocean life as they learn to draw and color with pastels. We will create detailed, pastel compositions on each day, focusing on a different ocean-themed subject. We will draw eye-catching sea stars along the shoreline and a pair of vibrant clown fish. We will illustrate a sea turtle with bold patterns, a blue crab and a wondrous scene of jellyfish. Our instruction will bring remarkable results, and you will want to head to the frame shop with your child’s finished pastel pieces.
